Hemoglobin (Hb) Solubility
This test checks for the presence of hemoglobin S, an abnormal protein in red blood cells that causes them to become stiff and sickle-shaped. It is useful for investigating the cause of unexplained anemia or determining if a person carries the genetic trait for sickle cell disease. While it helps identify if sickling hemoglobin is present, this test cannot distinguish between having sickle cell trait versus sickle cell disease on its own and requires confirmation for a final diagnosis.
